president of Panama, Juan Carlos Varela, today renewed the
"commitment" to the objectives of sustainable development and the
promotion of peace in the world, in his speech at the summit for peace in the

In
a session focused on commemorating the centenary of the birth of former South
African and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela, the Panamanian leader
wanted to recall Mandela's legacy, who knew how to "overcome social
inequality and racial discrimination on a global level".
"We
must recognize their service to humanity and the protection of human rights,
solidarity and democracy," added Varela, who said Mandela is a
"source of inspiration that should guide this organization" to the
UN.
After
endorsing one of Mandela's appointments - "our best weapon, which our
enemy can never resist, is peace" -, Varela said that Panama, "as a
multi-ethnic and multicultural country and respectful of diversity and
tolerance, believes faithfully in the capacity of countries in favor of the
resolution "of conflicts.
"War
